Children are some of my favourite portrait clients. I love working with kids because of how active they are, how expressive and how silly they can be. Their unique personalities, shown to us without filters or the weight of the world to dull their shine, provide some of the BEST photo opportunities. Granted, the younger kids aren't always the best at following directions, that can actually make for some good shots!
I had the honour of photographing my adopted niece a few days after her 4th birthday. She started school this year as well, so there have been some huge milestones being met by this little girl. She has such a big personality, and she knows what she wants (most of the time). She is smart and adorable and adventurous and ambitious. She has dreams, and we all know she can attain them!

I really wanted to capture that uniqueness that Heatherlynn possesses. She is so unlike all of the other kids I have encountered. While most kids are stubborn and resistant to a point, HL knows exactly what is going on, what she wants, and how she wants it--and she won't back down. She has dealt with a lot in her short life--she is being raised by her grandmother who has suffered from some health problems, she has a very strained relationship with her birth mother, and hardly sees her birth father. But she gets more than enough love from Sharron, and I have seen their relationship grow and strengthen since HL was born. Sharron is the only mother HL has ever known, the only person who has truly put her well-being in front of their own.
When you meet Heatherlynn, the first thing you will notice is her wildness. She is a born adventurer and daredevil, and doesn't care for safety precautions. She is always smiling, laughing, running and jumping, and exploring. She is incredibly active. What follows next is her command of language--she knows how to talk, and she doesn't like to stop. Stories, songs, telling you about her day--you ask her a single question and she has the words to talk for hours about everything. Trying to get her to sit still and focus is a chore, but one that is filled with giggles and smiles.

She is so loving and kind, it sort of hurts sometimes! She doesn't hide her feelings--if she doesn't like something, she will make sure that you know! She definitely has a mind of her own, which is wonderful. I love working with her because she always has her own ideas and her own plans. She wants to do something, you better get ready to chase after with your finger on the shutter button! She is always ready for anything, and she likes to take charge of groups and lead them through her adventures.
Over the last few weeks, HL has grown in her academic capabilities. She is progressing really well and learning so much! She has come such a long way, and it's hard to believe that she is only four--and even harder to believe that she is ALREADY four! Time flies by us and a lot of the time we miss out on special milestones and experiences in our kids lives.
